Jake & Isabel’s Spring Proposal at the Dallas Arboretum

Jake and Isabel’s proposal at the Dallas Arboretum and Botanical Garden was one I will remember forever! With spring in full bloom and blue skies above, this story had the perfect combination of planning, surprise, and joy. Jake found my name on the Arboretum’s preferred vendors list and reached out wanting to plan a surprise proposal for Isabel. We talked through several ideas, but he ultimately chose the Sunken Garden—a tucked-away gem that feels private and romantic.

Planning the Perfect Surprise Proposal

When you’re proposing in May at the Dallas Arboretum (especially on a Sunday), privacy and timing are everything. Jake went back and forth on whether or not to reserve the space—and I encouraged him to go for it. Renting out the Sunken Garden meant the Arboretum would provide rope barricades and staff to manage the area, keeping it clear of the weekend crowds.

Jake’s attention to detail was impressive. After a few calls and a lot of texts, we locked in every part of the plan. He told Isabel they were attending a brunch hosted by his bank, which meant she’d be dressed up and unsuspecting. She knew a proposal was coming sometime, but Jake had told her the ring wouldn’t be ready before their upcoming overseas trip. The truth? It arrived two days before the proposal—just in time.

Family, Florals, and a Big Surprise

Not only did Jake pull off the perfect surprise—he included all of their immediate family members in the experience. Everyone traveled to Dallas and stayed nearby without Isabel knowing a thing. That Sunday, May 4th, was forecasted for rain all week, but when the day arrived? It was sunshine and the most perfect spring temperature.

I arrived 45 minutes early to get parked, grab my entrance ticket, and make my way to the garden. I met up with some of the family at the gate, and we all walked in together. The Sunken Garden was already being roped off by Arboretum staff, and the family began setting the scene. They laid white rose petals along the path, brought champagne for a toast, and even had press-on nails in case Isabel noticed hers weren’t done. (Major sister win.)

Hiding in the Shrubs, Cameras Ready

As everyone finished setting up, I positioned myself far back in the greenery with both camera bodies ready—one with a wide angle lens and one with a zoom. This setup lets me capture wide context and emotional close-ups without being distracting. When Isabel and Jake were just around the corner, her sister texted me to say, “They’re coming!”

I spotted them walking hand-in-hand down the steps. Isabel looked radiant in a bright red dress. She may have noticed me, but probably assumed I was just photographing the garden. Jake led her into the middle of the Sunken Garden, turned to her, and dropped to one knee.

Her reaction was everything. Completely shocked, totally moved, and full of joy. I captured every second—from the “Oh my gosh!” face to the huge smile as she said yes.

A Joyful Reveal and Family Celebration

Right after she said yes, their families came out of hiding. There were hugs, tears, laughter, and a champagne toast. The whole garden echoed with celebration. It was such a powerful moment to witness—so much love and thought poured into a single moment.

After the cheers and toasts, I took Isabel and Jake around the Arboretum for a few more engagement photos. The garden in spring is a photographer’s dream: color everywhere, soft natural light, and so many beautiful backdrops to choose from. We visited a few favorite spots, including tucked-away paths and floral archways.

Why I Love Photographing Proposals

This session reminded me why I love photographing proposals so much. They’re fast-paced, emotional, and packed with real, raw reactions. There’s no staging. No prepping. Just one person asking the biggest question of their life and another saying yes. It’s pure magic.

Proposals like Jake and Isabel’s are so much more than just a “yes.” They tell a story. You can see the nerves, the anticipation, the joy, and the relief all in a few seconds. It’s a whirlwind in the best way, and I feel incredibly honored to document these moments.
