Getting ready for family photos? If you’ve ever wondered how to prepare kids for a photoshoot without stress or meltdowns, you’re not alone. As both a photographer and a mom, I know it can feel like a big task—but with the right approach, it can be a fun and memorable experience for everyone.

Here are 5 helpful tips to prepare your child for a successful (and even fun!) family mini session or full session:
1. Talk About It Like It’s an Adventure
Set the tone early by treating your session like something exciting. Use age-appropriate language like:
“We’re going to meet Molly, and she’s going to take some fun pictures of us!”
Let your kids know what to expect—smiling, snuggling, and maybe even a few silly moments. When kids feel like they’re part of something fun (and not forced), they’re more likely to stay relaxed and cooperative.

2. Dress for Comfort First, Style Second
Yes, I’m a photographer, so of course I love a good neutral color palette and coordinated outfits. But the top priority? Comfort.
Avoid scratchy fabrics, stiff collars, or anything that might make your child fidget. If your kiddo hates wearing shoes—bring them barefoot and embrace the moment. The more comfortable they feel, the more authentic your photos will be.

3. Arrive a Little Early (and Fully Fueled)
A hungry, rushed child is rarely a happy photo participant. Try to arrive 5–10 minutes early to give your family time to settle in, smooth flyaways, and get comfortable in the setting.
And don’t forget the snacks! Choose something quick and non-messy (like puffs, fruit snacks, or a granola bar) to keep energy up without stains or sticky hands.

4. Let Go of Perfection
Sometimes the best photos happen in between the poses. A quick hug, a stolen giggle, or even a pouty face can tell the most beautiful story.
If your child is having a moment—don’t stress. I’ve photographed hundreds of families and know how to work around moods, shyness, and meltdowns. Some of my favorite images ever came from letting the little ones just be.
Your only job is to show up and love your people. I’ll take care of the rest.

5. Bring One Small Comfort (If Needed)
If your child has a favorite stuffed animal or toy, bring it along! Sometimes just having a familiar item nearby makes a world of difference. I may even sneak it into a few frames—it’s part of their story, after all.
Bonus tip: If we’re shooting with very young kids, pack an extra outfit in case of spills or accidents—just in case!

Real Smiles > Perfect Poses
Photoshoots with kids are full of movement, unpredictability, and personality—and that’s exactly what makes them beautiful. I’ll guide you every step of the way so you can relax and enjoy the experience—even with wild toddlers in tow.
