What to Wear for Engagement Photos | Tips for Effortless, Elevated Style

Let’s Make This Fun (And Stress-Free)

You’re engaged—congrats! This is such a fun, fleeting season of life and one of my favorite things to photograph. Engagement sessions are a relaxed way for us to get to know each other before your wedding, and they give you a chance to capture this chapter exactly as it is—sweet, exciting, and totally you.

I want you to show up feeling confident, not stressed. So here’s a breakdown of what you can expect, how to prep, and my best tips for what to wear and bring so your photos feel natural, effortless, and elevated.

Golden Hour is Everything

I love to schedule engagement sessions about 1–2 hours before sunset—that dreamy golden hour window when the light is soft and flattering. It’s not just about the glow (although yes, it’s magical)—it’s also about the way it brings out natural skin tones and adds a cinematic quality to your images.

Quick tip: if you’re only planning one outfit, we’ll shoot for around 90 minutes. If you’re doing two looks, we’ll go closer to two hours. Plan a little buffer time before your session starts so you’re not rushed, and maybe even make a date night reservation afterward—you’ll be dressed up and feeling cute already!

Outfit Inspo That Photographs Beautifully

What to Wear for Engagement Photos: For Her

This is your excuse to go full glam if you want to. I always say: there’s no such thing as too dressed up for your engagement session. Long, flowy dresses always photograph like a dream—they flatter all body types, add movement, and bring a romantic feel to your photos (plus: twirl factor).

Neutrals, pastels, soft blues, blush, taupe, cream—those tones love the camera. Avoid neons or loud patterns, which can pull attention away from your faces. If you’re wearing heels, pack flats to walk between locations, and maybe bring a cozy layer or coat if it’s chilly out.

What to Wear for Engagement Photos: For Him

Layers always win. A blazer or sport coat, dress shirt, and well-fitted pants go a long way in looking polished and put together without being stiff. Closed-toe shoes, like leather dress shoes or boots, are a strong choice.

Stick with muted colors that coordinate with your partner’s look, but don’t match exactly. Think: navy and blush, camel and cream, or olive and soft grey. Solids are timeless, while bold patterns can feel distracting.

Think Beyond the Outfit

If you’ve been eyeing a cute picnic set-up, have a vintage car, or love the idea of fresh florals or a blanket to sit on—let’s do it! Props are totally optional, but they can add an editorial touch and help tell your story in a more personalized way.

Also: clean your ring! Your hands will be in a lot of photos, so treat yourself to a manicure and make that sparkle pop. And if you’re considering professional hair and makeup? Go for it. It’s one less thing to worry about and always photographs beautifully.

What If He’s Not Into It?

Totally normal. Most guys aren’t jumping for joy at the idea of two hours of photos, but here’s the secret: when they see how laid-back and fun the session is, they relax. Show him a few photos you love, tell him why this matters to you, and trust me—by the end, he’ll probably say, “That was actually fun.” Happens every time.

Final Tips for a Smooth Session

  • Plan more time than you think you need to get ready
  • Pack a small bag: shoes, makeup touch-ups, water, layers, and accessories
  • If you’re doing two outfits & two locations, keep in mind the scenery and base your outfits on that
  • Don’t overthink it—your connection is what will shine through most

Celebrating You Wherever You Are

Whether you’re planning your session in Dallas, dreaming of mountain views in Colorado, or saying yes to something totally off-the-map—I’m here for it. I’ve photographed couples all over the U.S. and internationally in places like Sweden, Aruba, Santa Barbara, Miami, New York, and beyond.

From local sunset strolls to destination sessions with full itineraries, I’ll help you plan every detail and send over a custom quote based on your vision.

Where to Shop for Engagement Session Looks

When it comes to choosing outfits for your engagement session, the right pieces can make all the difference. For her, I love romantic silhouettes and soft tones—long, flowy dresses always photograph beautifully. Some of my favorite go-to brands are Revolve, Lulus, Aritzia, Anthropologie, Baltic Born, Show Me Your Mumu, Zara, and Rent the Runway if you want to elevate your look without committing to a purchase.

For him, tailored pieces and layering always photograph best—think smart casual with a twist. I recommend Bonobos, J.Crew, State & Liberty, or Banana Republic for timeless staples. For something a little more elevated or unexpected, check out Todd Snyder, Abercrombie & Fitch, Spier & Mackay, Club Monaco, or Massimo Dutti. These brands have great options for well-fitted suits, blazers, and smart layers in camera-friendly colors that pair beautifully with any location.

There is also always Amazon with some amazing options that can come quickly or check out your local consignment or thrift stores for unique pieces!
